Communicating during the Semester
The best way to reach me is to send an email to my App State address and I'll typically respond promptly (you can find my contact information in AsULearn). I’m generally online Monday through Friday during daytime working hours to ensure prompt correspondence. However, I am working towards building a Calm Inbox, which is an idea inspired by my media literacy colleague Dr. Denise Chapman. A Calm Inbox is checked at limited points during working hours in order to establish clear expectations for correspondence, honor boundaries related to professional and personal time, and cultivate balance in a time of increasing digital communications. If your email is received during business hours between Monday and Friday, then I will reply as soon as I am able to thoughtfully consider your inquiry or request. Emails received after 5pm or over the weekend might be answered the next day or Monday.
Before emailing, please review the syllabus and other course materials to ensure your question isn’t already addressed– you can also use the Class Chat if your question is pertinent to our entire learning community. When deciding to draft an email, provide a clear subject, a kind salutation, complete sentences that offer specific details about your inquiry, and a closing. Here's an infographic with tips on how to email a teacher. Likewise, I will craft emails that are respectful and pleasant.

Class Chat
Our Class Chat is a flexible, community learning space that I set up just for your class using Mountaineer Apps. It provides an ungraded, anytime learning option for you to ask questions, share resources, connect, and engage in dialogue throughout the semester. Although this space itself is ungraded, you'll learn that using the chat can be an important aspect of engagement in learning as a community of practice. Always be respectful and courteous as a member of our class community.
